Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church Coat of Arms
The winged lion with a nimbus at the top is a symbol for Saint Mark. Below the lion, a wavy edge represents the Susquehanna River
Below the wavy line, a silver background with a red cross is taken from the Coat of Arms for the Virginia Company, honoring Captain John Smith’s 1609 exploration here and Edward Palmer’s 1662 patent for land at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. The red cross on a silver background is also a part of the Coat of Arms of the Episcopal Church.
The shell is another symbol for Saint Mark. It was also an Indian medium of exchange, symbolizing the first English trading post in Maryland at the mouth of the Susquehanna River.
