Our History

St. Mark’s Church was originally a “Chapel of Ease” to St. Mary Anne’s Church in North East.  The cornerstone was laid on April 3, 1844 by William Rollinson Whittingham, the Bishop of Maryland, on land donated by the neighboring Gale family.  The cemetery was originally that families’ private burying ground.  The Chapel was consecrated in August of 1845 as a Chapel of Ease of Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church in North East, Maryland. The Reverend Richard Whittingham, Jr. became its Deacon and Assistant to the Rector at St. Mary Anne’s.

In 1913 St. Mark’s was separated from St. Mary Anne’s and established as Susquehanna Parish (now the Diocese of Easton).  The Parish House was named for Howard Tipton, a dedicated lay worker in the Parish.

Historic St. Mark’s Church serves a rapidly growing western Cecil County.  It provides a spiritual home, vital Christian fellowship and important community services for the entire Susquehanna Parish.
